Unsourced material

[edit]

The following is unsourced information:

  • Stephen Sommers began writing the script, then called Tentacle, when he worked at Hollywood Pictures in the mid-90s.
  • The cruise ship is named the Argonautica, a reference to Jason and the Argonauts, one of Stephen Sommers' favorite movies.
  • B-grade TV action movie Chain of Command made use of stock footage from Deep Rising, most notably shots of the exterior of the Argonautica, including the explosion sequences. This led to an obvious error which exposed the recycled footage: the name 'Argonautica' is seen clearly on the bow as the ship explodes; whereas the fictitious liner in Chain of Command where the President is being held captive is called the Su-Maru.
  • Famke Janssen's character Trillian is named after the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy character of the same name. Although here Trillian is her actual name, in Hitch-Hiker's it's short for Tricia McMillan.
  • The "Chinese M1 L1 triple-pulse assault rifles" used by the pirates are actually heavily modified Calico 960 submachine guns fitted with 100-round magazines (as opposed to the "thousand-round capacity" mentioned by Hanover). Five non-functional rotating barrels were built around the actual barrel like a Minigun of each Calico and driven by a small electric motor connected to the trigger, so that whenever the gun was fired, it appeared to be firing out of the rotating barrels.
  • Captain Atherton, played by Derrick O'Connor, was named after cinematographer Howard Atherton.

While this is interesting, we can't use it unless you provide a source. Also, none of this is really trivia, as trivia by its definition is "unimportant information" - it therefore shouldn't be in a trivia section but instead the information should be incorporated into the main article. - Tbsdy lives (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 03:44, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The bit about Deep Rising originally being titled Tentacle is noted in the draft that is linked in the External Links section, which is also dated as being from 1996. The information about some footage being recycled in Chain of Command is also backed up by the article linked in External Links. - Michael24 29 January 2009 —Preceding undated comment was added at 07:27, 30 January 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Plot Summary

[edit]

The plot summary tag has been in place since 2007, with no change. I have looked at the sumamry, and although yes - it's a bit long, it's also all the salient points of the film. Unless anybody objects in the next week or so, I'll remove the tag. a_man_alone (talk) 14:07, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No comments either way, so I've removed the tag. a_man_alone (talk) 16:29, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

38 model

[edit]

I've removed this sentence from the page: "Visual effects are combined from a 38 model of the luxurious ship" I'm guessing it means that there was a 38 foot model of the ship built for visual effects - but the sentence was in the wrong place, badly worded, and uncited. Now I like this film in a cheesy way so welcome additions to the page, but think that such a statement needs referencing, and putting in the right place. a_man_alone (talk) 15:53, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

King Kong rumor

[edit]

Someone — I’m assuming it’s one person — keeps updating this page with an unsubstantiated rumor that Deep Rising was supposed to have a sequel featuring King Kong. It wasn’t. The final scene was an homage, and Stephen Sommers stated as much on his blu-ray commentary, but somebody wildly misinterpreted that as meaning it was some kind of prequel to an unmade film. King Kong was already at Universal with Peter Jackson attached to direct at that time. Stephen Sommers was not attached to a King Kong movie at any point. The “Kong Rising” rumor has floated around the internet, providing this page’s vandal with dubious “sources,” but it’s not true and needs to stop being added to the page.
